Amazon to invest $2.8 billion to build its second data center region in India – TechCrunch

Amazon will invest about $2.8 billion in Telangana to set up a new AWS Cloud region in the southern state of India, a top Indian politician announced on Friday.

The investment will allow Amazon to launch an AWS Cloud region in Hyderabad city by mid-2022, said K. T. Rama Rao, Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications, Municipal Administration and Urban Development and Industries & Commerce Departments, Government of Telangana.

The new AWS Asia Region will be Amazon’s second infrastructure region in India, Amazon said in a press release. It did not disclose the size of the investment.

“The new AWS Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region will enable even more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and non-profit organizations to run their applications and serve end users from data centers located in India,” the e-commerce giant said.

California voters back new data privacy law beefing up CCPA

Millions of California voters have backed a controversial amendment to the state’s consumer privacy laws, voting in favor of Proposition 24 by a 56%-44% margin

A state guide for voters describes the proposition, also called the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), as a way for consumers to prevent businesses from sharing personal information, correct inaccurate personal information, and limit businesses’ use of “sensitive personal information,” including precise geolocation, race, ethnicity, and health information. The act would also create the California Privacy Protection Agency.

Rubik’s Cube turns 40 with a virtual global puzzle competition Saturday

This year, participants will compete using Rubik’s Connected Cube, a digital twist on the classic cube for the smartphone era.

The Rubik’s Cube has been a puzzling pop-culture staple for decades. On Thursday, the oft-enigmatic puzzle officially becomes a quadragenarian. To celebrate the 40th anniversary, a global virtual competition is scheduled for Nov. 7.

Simply solving the cubed puzzle is too low of a bar for some. Instead, the challenge becomes how fast one is able to solve a Rubik’s Cube. For these “speedcubers,” Rubik’s competitions are won and lost by mere milliseconds. In fact, the world record for the fastest Rubik’s cube solve is 3.47 seconds. This was set by Yusheng Du who broke Feliks Zemdegs’ previous record by just 0.75 seconds, per Rubik’s.
